FIELD TRIALS - Spaniels
Open ESS Trial - Monday 5 December held Herriard
Luck of the Draw…..Watson and Holmes!!!
I had two dogs withdraw late on Saturday night and working down my reserves list I eventually got M Watson and K Holmes to take a late run in our Open stake.
The sun was shining for our second visit to Herriard this year. We started at the base of the common and despite great spaniel land, the first two handles; John Pay and Mark Watson has very long runs, and it was a credit to both dogs not to make a mistake. The sun had pulled the birds into the warmer part of the woods, and once they reached it, game was plenty.
Talsbrook Shanti handles by Kelly Ward had a great first run; coming out of the Nursery’s drive and into the Common, where the ground changes from bramble to braken, but still in the woods. Goldcombe Moonstar Dancer had a nice short run and Katherine managed to show the bitch’s hunting ability, steady to flush and a fast stylish retrieve. With just 4 dogs left to run, we moved to a new bit of land to finish the trial.
Still in the sunshine the trial was declared over with both Dave Anderson and Martin Ashman happy that they have a winner. This was Mark’s first open win and the Herriard shoot were delighted to be sending him to the Championships.
The results were:

AV Novice Trial - Saturday 12 November held Herriard
The trial was held at Herriard Estate by kind permission of Mr Graham Wood. This estate offers great spaniel country, the trial took place in woodlands with braken and bramble. The November moon had brought in quite a few woodcock, and it was the woodcock that gave some of the novice dogs a difficult time on their retrieves. We also had some game running on, so the dogs had to really be in control, in order not to run-in. It was too high a temptation for 4 dogs. There were no run-offs both judges were happy that they had all the placing sorted by 1.30pm.
My thanks also go to our four guns; Mr Martin Johnson and his guest Dwain, Mr Peter Lee and Mr Mike Maynard.
Steward of the beat was Mr Mike Maynard and special thanks to Shaun and David for staying on ‘STOP’ all day.
