The early morning rain quickly stopped and the weather stayed dry for this trial. A late October cool snap was in the air, which warmed up later in the day and just as we started the second round the sun came out. A good number of birds were found throughout the day, giving every dog opportunity to shine. Throughout the day the wind was almost none existent and the scent was short, but multiple species including woodcock pointed and produced.

Dog No 2: (GSP Dog) Goosepoint Waddington at Abbanash (AI) JW, handled by N Coe

This dog hunted with pace and style throughout it’s run in the wet mixed cover crop. The dog stayed in contact with its handler and was sharp on its whistle, no game was found on its first round.

In the second round this dog was in clover, the dog worked what little of a cheek wind we had well and with good pace and style, coming on a staunch point on the boundary of the field. The dog produced the bird on command and was steady to the shot and fall, the retrieve of the hen pheasant was completed quickly and efficiently to hand.

Dog No 10: (HWV Dog) Canalgame Jozef, Handled by R Dockwray

In the first round this dog ran with style and pace through dense wet mixed game cover crop. No game was found in this round for this dog.

Second round this dog had a field of rape for its beat, on a slight backwind that dropped away to nothing periodically throughout its run. The dog ran well taking big bites of the ground and working back towards the handler. On the far left the dog came on a staunch point while working back to the handler, the handler and guns moved in to position and with some handling four partridges were produced. Steady to the shots and fall of two birds, the handler was asked to send for the left hand bird. The 60m retrieve was completed efficiently, the handler was then asked to send her dog for the second retrieve. This bird was much closer around 20m to the right, quick on the run out and taking a direct line this retrieve was also completed with ease.

We would like to thank Canal Game Shoot for their kind hospitality and Francis Briley for his support of HPR Field Trials and for bringing multiple new grounds to the HPR Field Trial scene, this year in particular. Thank you to all of the competitors who entered under us as judges and to Hampshire Gundog Society for asking us to judge.
